TOMS: Even though I want a pair, I need to get this off my chest.

You know, I really appreciate the TOMS movement, I truly do.

In fact, I want a pair of TOMS myself, despite the fact that your feet end up all stank after prolonged use of it. And as much as I’d like to say that I’m wanting a pair for the whole “One for One” cause – you know, the cause that made TOMS popular – I’m going to go out on a limb here and just say that the boots are just so fucking adorbz and that the fashion truly outweighed its good cause for my decision to slap my credit card number online.

There’s one thing that I have to say about the original style of TOMS – especially when guys wear them – that spurred a bit of a “gay” reaction out of me. Come to think of it, these are rare reactions, really. I’m kind of a tomboy kind of gay: simple t-shirt and jeans, sneakers, and a cap. I’m not trained well in the art of fabulousness and fierce like all my other friends are and I’m still actually trying to make “fetch” happen.

Back to the point, to me, it doesn’t really matter if a guy wears them with some Obey shirt paired off with shorts, skinnies, boot cuts, cropped jeans, etc. When I look at a guy’s ensemble from head to toe and it ultimately ends at a pair of Canvas Classics, all I see are ballet flats.

I know there’s a significant difference that you can see between ballet flats and TOMS canvases, but whenever I check guys out look at guys’ outfits and they’re strutting around in canvases, something kicks up in my spirit and I’m like, “Oh how cute, he’s out in flats.” And then I have to remind myself of TOMS and then I get all discombobulated from there because a) I’m totally judging and b) said guy is probably wearing them because they’re comfortable, only to be subjected to my judgement.

Elizabeth of sorta kinda nailed my perspective over the head and wrote an entry entitled Ballet Flats: Why Doesn’t Everyone Wear Them?In her entry, she writes:

The thing I like the most about ballet flats, if I had to decide, is the fact that they are just as easily dressed up or down. Ballet flats with a pair of jeans is just as fashionable and appealing as flats with a nice dress.

Same can be said about TOMS. They are easily dressed up or down, with a pair of jeans or with a nice dress. Now imagine me, all cute and thangs, with a flower hat, a summer dress poised with a cute sunflower design, and a pair of yellow TOMS. It’s easily a substitute for ballet flats. Now take it all off me (you naughty dog) and throw me a white shirt, some jeans, a black hat, but keep the yellow TOMS on and BOOM – you still got yourself a guy with some ballet flats on.

That’s not to say that I’m so concerned about others thinking that I’m wearing ballet flats. You shouldn’t be either unless you’re walking past me and I’m checking your shoes out ! But in realness, or at least my perspective, TOMS has provided men all over the world an outlet, filling in this social gap for men everywhere who want to wear ballet flats.

I truly dig it, ya’ll. But I’m gunning for the boots.

Nice post. I never thought of guys buying Toms cuz they look like ballet flats but now that I think about it, you’re right. For the guy that likes and wants to wear ballet flats but is too afraid of the consequences, comments and other such stuff, Toms are perfect. I’m long past caring what other people think about what I wear so I’ll just stick with the super cute and feminine ballet flats.

    Great post.

    Me in flats

Hard to believe it’s been a couple years since I last commented. I’m still obsessed with wearing cute women’s ballet flats. I say women’s cuz there aren’t many designers making them for men, haha. As well, I’ve never owned a pair of Toms, flats work better for me.
